KNUT asks TSC to give Headteachers Administrative Powers over JSS

Head teachers who have been given interim roles as Principals at junior secondary schools have submitted a request to the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) requesting that they be given full administrative powers in their schools.

Ann Cheruiyot, the Executive Secretary of the Kericho KNUT, expressed the opinion that the acting Principals who have been granted authorisation letters ought to be given substantive jobs in the JSS.

“As things currently stand, Mr. Chairman, they do not have complete authority to operate JSS. In addition to this, we are demanding that the head teachers and their deputies who have been serving in an acting capacity for a number of years be confirmed, as she said further.

The unionist who was speaking in Kericho stated that it was sad that people who were serving in an acting capacity had been bypassed by the new administrators who have been sent to the institutions. In her words,

Mr. David Bore, Executive Secretary of the Kipkelion branch of the Kenya National Union of Teachers, was in charge of leading a team of KNUT officials as they presented their suggestions to the Presidential Working Party on Educational Reforms.

Their stance was that Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) should be housed in Primary Schools, a call that was ultimately taken up by the government.

“We are sure that the issues will be handled by the government, especially given the fact that the first budget under the current administration has been forwarded to Parliament.

We make the request that each and every elementary school should have a Junior High School.” He said

In order to alleviate the severe teacher shortage, he suggested that the government give hiring teachers a higher priority and then assign those teachers to Junior Secondary Schools and Secondary Schools.

“Especially in the new system, there is a severe lack of available teaching positions.”

Learners in JSS are being negatively affected since there are not enough teachers. Can you ever fathom having just one instructor for an entire Junior Secondary School? Is there any way that it could be accomplished by humans? He said

The executive secretary also brought to light the predicament of P1 teachers who have improved their training to graduate level but are not recognised by TSC. This means that their remuneration cannot be increased, nor can they be deployed to teach in secondary schools. The executive secretary brought this to light in order to shed light on the situation.

They did not get a mean grade of C+ in KCSE and C+ in two teaching subjects, which rendered the training upgrade meaningless. The reason for this is that.

Because of this, many educators have lost their motivation during the past decade. He said
