KNEC’s New Strategy to Curb KCPE & KCSE Exams Early Exposure

The Education Committee of the National Assembly, after visiting New Mitihani House, expressed satisfaction with the Kenya National Examination Council’s (KNEC) readiness for upcoming exams and their efforts to prevent cheating.

Julius Melly, the committee chairman, mentioned close monitoring of social media to prevent the spread of false information.

KNEC has implemented new security measures, including a change in the process of collecting exam papers. Instead of collecting all papers in the morning, center administrators will only pick up morning papers. Afternoon papers will be retrieved just before the exam to limit early access. Additionally, the practice of officials collecting papers within subcounties will be reviewed, with a focus on proximity.

KNEC plans to acquire additional containers to transport exam materials to schools, reducing collection and drop-off times. These measures are being implemented three months before national exams.

The number of candidates for various exams includes 1.4 million for KCPE, 1.2 million for KPSEA, and 903,260 for KCSE. Exam dates are scheduled for late October to late November.

Exam malpractice has been a concern, with blame games involving government agencies. The police and investigative authorities have faced criticism for their roles in combating cheating.

The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) has accused the judiciary of protecting cybercriminals and has been criticized for not promptly removing websites selling fake exam materials.

Preparations for the exams are in progress, with visits to the printer and assessment of construction progress at New Mitihani House. A budget allocation of Sh350 million has been proposed to complete outstanding projects within a year.
