The Kenya National Examination Council (Knec) has issued guidelines regarding items that are prohibited in exam rooms. These guidelines were posted on Twitter and include the following restrictions:

1. No electronic gadgets are allowed in the exam room, including mobile phones, smartwatches, tablets, body cameras, camera pens, earphones, and items that can connect via Bluetooth.

2. Items such as handbags, briefcases, backpacks, and Kiondos (traditional woven bags) should not be brought into the exam room.

3. Students are not allowed to have any written or printed material, whether it is related to the exam paper or not.

4. Written material on clothing or footwear is prohibited.

5. Wristwatches are not allowed in the exam room.

6. Students with tattoos on their bodies must declare them, as no written material is allowed on the body.

These guidelines come as candidates across the country prepare to sit for the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams. Over 3.5 million candidates will take these national examinations, with KCPE candidates reaching a record number.

KCSE exams are scheduled to begin on October 23 and end on November 24, with rehearsals on October 19. KCPE and Kenya Primary School Examination Alliance (KPSEA) rehearsals are set for Friday, October 27, and exams for both will run from Monday, October 30, to Wednesday, November 1.

The 2023 KCPE examinations will mark the end of the 8-4-4 system in primary schools. In response to allegations of exam malpractice in the 2022 KCSE exams, the National Assembly Education Committee conducted an investigation, uncovering various malpractices, including collusion, mobile phone use, impersonation, smuggling of unauthorized materials, leakage, and plagiarism. Knec is now working to prevent such cases of malpractice in the 2023 national exams.
