KNEC Postpones Payment of KNEC Examiners Again
Those teachers who were responsible for the administration of the 2022 national exams will now have to wait until the end of the month before they can begin receiving payment.
During the tests and evaluations that took place in 2022, a total of 5,647 teachers served as examiners, 74,990 served as invigilators, 28,727 served as supervisors, and 28,408 served as centre managers.
Initially, educators were ecstatic, and they were looking forward to receiving their salaries beginning this week, as Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu had earlier indicated they would. However, the situation has since changed.
Machogu had stated that the government will begin paying dues owed to examiners who worked for the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) in the 2022 exams this coming Monday.
Speaking on Saturday at Kangaru School in Manyatta Constituency, Embu County, on the inaugural Education Day, area MP Gitonga Mukunji announced that Ksh. 2 billion has been put aside to ensure that the debt of KNEC examiners, contracted officials, and suppliers is cleared.
Machogu has stated that, going ahead, his ministry will make fast payment to examiners a priority in order to guarantee that delays of this nature will not occur again.
“Walimu wetu ambao tunatumia kuwa examiners katika mitihani yetu ya kitaifa najua tulichelewa kidogo kulipa pesa yao wale walitusaidia national marking ya 2022 lakini sasa kupitia kwa mheshimiwa rais tumepewa billion mbili kutoka next week mimi nitawalipa wote,” he said.
In addition, CS Machogu stated that they had begun paying the dues of the contractors who had been responsible for the construction of Competence Based Curriculum (CBC) classes beginning the previous week. The total amount owed was approximately Ksh.2.5 billion.
In order to lower the number of students to instructors in the classroom, he went on to say that the Ministry of Education would be hiring an additional 25,000 teachers during this current fiscal year, bringing the total number of teachers employed by the Ministry to 30,000.
“…we have also been capable, for the first time in a number of years, of employing 36,000 teachers during the previous fiscal year. Because the president is able to recognise that we need to have enough teachers for appropriate quality teaching to continue, the government will employ 24,000 teachers just this year alone, a figure that we have not had in a long time. “The Education CS added that this is because the president is able to recognise that we need to have enough teachers for proper quality teaching to continue.”

Manyatta Member of Parliament Gitonga Mukunji and other leaders who were there applauded the event, adding that it will be a game-changer in moulding the future professional choices of the young minds. Other leaders who were present also applauded the programme.
“Another plan that is scheduled to begin in the near future is the digitization of our educational institutions. Nataka kuhakikisha kila day secondary school iko na computer na wototo wanaweza kutumia computers mapema,” Mukunji added.
