KNEC Includes Deputy School Heads in Contracted Professionals

The Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) has officially included deputy heads of institutions in the list of contracted professionals. In the past, deputy headteachers and principals assisted during national examinations but were not formally recognized by KNEC.

This meant they were not eligible for stipend payments from KNEC for their contributions to exam preparation and learner management.

In the recent changes, deputy heads of institutions will now assist their school heads during the national examination period, a move aimed at enhancing exam integrity and curbing cheating, according to KNEC.

KNEC has also introduced several other changes that will impact national exams and assessments scheduled to commence in October.

Last week, KNEC issued a statement prohibiting contracted professionals, examiners, and assessors from participating in activities that could compromise their roles. KNEC emphasized that while peer learning and improving pedagogical skills are valuable practices during exam preparation, the Oath of Secrecy signed by all contracted professionals, examiners, and assessors prohibits activities that create conflicts of interest or disclose their identities as KNEC examiners/assessors.

As part of its preparations, KNEC is set to administer national examinations to approximately 2.3 million learners, including those taking this year’s Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams.

Around 1,415,315 candidates will sit for the KCPE exam, while another 903,260 will take the KCSE test. KNEC Chief Executive David Njengere has confirmed that preparations have been made for these candidates, as well as the 1,282,574 Grade Six learners who will participate in the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA).
