Kisumu Girls Teacher Arrested Over Inciting Learners to Strike
A male teacher at Kisumu Girls High School has been arrested in connection with the recent student strike. The school alleges that the teacher played a role in inciting the students to boycott school activities and programs by staging the strike.
However, Zablon Owange, the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) secretary general in Kisumu, argues that the teacher is being used as a scapegoat. He believes that the school administration is attempting to cover up other issues within the school by blaming the teacher. The teacher was arrested on Saturday and is currently held at Kisumu police station.
Before the strike, the students had written a letter to the administration, expressing their concerns about corporal punishment imposed by teachers. Nelson Simiyu, the county director of Education, stated that efforts to address the students’ concerns were unsuccessful as they were not willing to engage in dialogue.
Additionally, he mentioned that the students had demanded to listen to modern music during prayer time, which is not in line with the Teachers Service Commission’s code of conduct.
The situation now raises questions about whether the students who were sent home will be recalled in time for the Form Four students to continue their preparations for the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations scheduled for November.
