Kisumu Girls closed indefinitely after students’ unrest
Kisumu Girls High School has been shut down indefinitely due to a disturbance caused by its students. On Sunday morning, September 17, the students left the school premises.
According to reports, Ministry of Education officials are currently in a closed-door meeting with the school administration to address the situation. Nelson Sifuna, the Nyanza Regional Education Director, revealed that the students began displaying signs of unrest on Friday, which escalated on Sunday.
He stated, “Since Friday, there have been ongoing issues within the school. A number of girls were disruptive and unwilling to participate in school activities. This eventually escalated to the point where they were shouting down anyone attempting to address them.”
Sifuna further explained, “The situation took a turn for the worse when officers from the National Government Administration and Ministry of Education attempted to speak to the students in the Dining Hall, but they responded with anger. When I was summoned, I hurried to the school and addressed them, but they were reluctant to openly voice their grievances. We provided them with paper to write down their concerns.”

The situation deteriorated on Sunday when the students became unruly due to a power outage. Consequently, the school’s board of governors convened and made the decision to send the students home in an effort to restore order.
Sifuna added, “This morning, their agitation escalated further. They gathered in the Dining Hall and attempted to play loud music. When the blackout occurred, they began shouting and tossing papers. The Board held a meeting and concluded that closing the school temporarily was necessary to address their grievances and restore order.”
As of now, the school’s administration and the Ministry of Education have not yet issued an official statement regarding the situation.
