Kisumu County Government has announced plans to collaborate with the Kiwimbi Community Centre and Library in Busia in order to encourage communities to embrace vocational training.
This follows a Thursday visit by Kisumu First Lady Dorothy Nyong’o to the Kiwimbi Community Centre and Library in Teso North sub-county.
According to Kisumu County’s chief officer in charge of Social Services, Haggai Kadiri, the county government is reviewing areas of collaboration between Kisumu and Kiwimbi, as well as exploring avenues for providing free vocational training while also advancing in education after completion. Completing Class Eight and Form Four remains a challenge for many students.
Nyong’o visited the Kiwimbi Community Centre and Library in Amagoro town on Thursday and expressed interest in replicating some of the community facility’s programs in Kisumu County.
She stated that she discovered the existence of the community study centre through Kiwimbi General Manager Catherine Malala at a golf tournament in the United States before becoming interested in learning more about the programs offered by the facility.
According to Kadiri, a partnership on vocational training would be a sure way to engage students, particularly those from low-income families.
“We have learnt a lot form this Kiwimbi programme and we have seen that it is actually changing the lives of many people especially young people,” he said.
The centre primarily provides pupil instructors to selected local schools that are short on teachers.
The primary school program aims to assist overburdened teachers in the participating schools so that students can easily learn, pass their exams, and progress to secondary school and, eventually, university.
Kiwimbi accomplishes this by providing critical academic assistance in the foundational subjects of English and Mathematics.
Apart from touring the Kiwimbi Community Centre and Library, Nyong’o and Kisumu County Government officials also visited Amagoro, Kidek, Ikapolok, and Malaba Township primary schools, which are direct beneficiaries of the centre’s services.
Kiwimbi provides teaching staff support to the four schools.
The entire teaching staff was hired from within the community.
The teaching program aims to reduce the workload of Teachers Service Commission-employed teachers in schools. Teachers are in scarcity at the institutions involved.
