Kisii and Mount Kenya University Students Refuse Saturday Exams

An online petition has been created by university students from the Mt Kenya University, Kisii campus, to stop the school from holding exams on Saturdays, citing that day as a day of worship.

The petition claims that the organisation has routinely disregarded requests from Seventh Day Adventist students who are unable to take exams on Saturday.

Additionally, students petitioned the Commission for University Education (CUE) to verify that the campus complies with the legal and administrative requirements of the Universities Act, 2012.

The Act mandates that institutions follow inclusion standards that forbid discrimination against students based on their religion or other beliefs.

According to Article 32(1) and (2) of the Kenyan Constitution of 2010, this issue needs to be resolved right away in order to protect equality and the fundamental freedom to worship.

We attend church on Saturdays as Seventh-day Adventist students. Any tests that are held on the Sabbath effectively bar us from taking them.

The kids explained that as a result, they were denied the right to vote and were not allowed to compete fairly with their peers who went to church on Saturdays.

The students claimed that skipping exams scheduled on a day of worship had a negative impact on their grades and general performance.

“Sign this petition in solidarity with students who are not only aggrieved but disenfranchised as a result of missing exams due to the scheduling conflict,” the petition’s signatories begged.

The petition has almost 1,000 student signatures. The University has apparently taken the students’ request into consideration, according to EducationNewsArena.co.ke.

The students had demanded that exams be moved from Saturdays to alternate days during the week by the dean of the Mount Kenya Campus and the university administration.

CUE has not yet acknowledged receiving the petition or taking any action in response.
