Kiambu County Launches Lunch Programme to Benefit 16,000 Learners
“Over 16,000 children in Kiambu County are set to benefit from a recently launched lunch initiative. This program, valued at Sh20 million, is a collaboration between Limuru NGCDF and Food for Education, a non-governmental organization focused on 40 public primary schools.
The decision to implement this initiative stemmed from a survey revealing that many children in Kiambu schools miss lunch due to economic hardship.
The project not only aims to provide meals for children but also create 150 job opportunities in schools, including cooks and other support staff. The program’s first phase will involve the construction of a large kitchen at Kamandura Primary School, where initial testing will occur. Trucks will transport food to schools while more modern kitchens are built in other primary schools.
Limuru MP John Kiragu highlighted the anticipated benefits, stating that pupil retention and academic performance should significantly improve once the program commences. He emphasized that children can’t concentrate in class on empty stomachs and mentioned that this initiative will relieve parents of lunch expenses.

During the launch event at Mirithu Primary School, Limuru constituency manager Earnest Gacumi expressed optimism about how the program would enhance education in the region. He pointed out that many children skip lunch during their crucial growth years, and this program will ensure they receive a nutritious meal, ultimately leading to improved results and higher school attendance.
Jane Muthoni, a parent from Ndeiya, welcomed the program, stating that it arrives at a time when providing meals has become challenging for parents. She stressed that well-fed children have a better chance of performing well in exams, explaining that parents often prioritize dinner and a light breakfast over packing lunch for their children.”
