A Kenyan student has gained international recognition for his outstanding efforts to bring about change for Kenyans with disabilities.
James Karanja, a Kenyan student at Flinders University in South Australia, outperformed his peers from around the world to win the title of international student of the year in 2021.
The awards provide an opportunity for the global community, academic institutions, the local community, and businesses to recognize international students’ achievements during their time at university.
The student received the award after demonstrating exceptional efforts to engage people with disabilities through change at home.
He earned a bachelor’s degree in Disability Policy and Practice last semester and is now pursuing a master’s degree in Disability Policy and Practice at the same university.
Despite the fact that he has not studied in 15 years, he has made plans to achieve academic excellence. To make his dreams come true, he carefully selected courses that were aligned with his goals of addressing the needs of the disabled in Kenya.
“Being recognised for the award gives me the drive to take a leading role in promoting social inclusion and active participation of people with disability in the labour markets.” He stated in his acceptance speech.
James formed a peer support group of students from various academic disciplines and cultures to enrich his social and educational experiences. He started a WhatsApp mentoring group for other African disability policy students through this support network.
He also took part in other student engagement initiatives, such as being the founding treasurer of Flinders Friendship International, a club that helps students from diverse backgrounds make friends at the university.
The judges were impressed by his determination to make a difference in the lives of people with disabilities back home.
“The award constantly reminds me of the disability slogan “Nothing for us without us. None of the disability programs that I initiate in Kenya will fail to include the feelings, aspirations and the voice of people with disabilities.”
James, who also won the 2021 Academic Excellence Postgraduate (Coursework) Award, is a firm believer that people with disabilities can contribute to the social and economic development of their communities.
