Kenya to launch RPL policy as first batch of students graduate
Kenya is set to launch its Recognition Prior Learning (RPL) policy as the first group of students who have completed the program graduate. The RPL policy, aimed at transforming the education sector by recognizing skills acquired through experience, will be officially launched during the graduation ceremony scheduled for October 6, 2023.
Dr. Esther Muoria, the Principal Secretary for Technical and Vocational Education and Training, highlighted the significance of the RPL policy and guidelines. They will establish standards for acknowledging the knowledge, skills, and competencies of individuals, regardless of when, where, or how they acquired them.
RPL serves as a tool for lifelong learning, facilitating access to higher education, credit transfer, and admission to formal educational institutions. This initiative, introduced by former President Uhuru Kenyatta, is expected to enhance learners’ skills and increase their employment and advanced learning opportunities.

The announcement was made following a review of the RPL implementation guidelines and policy framework, conducted by a technical committee led by Dr. Alice Kande, the acting Director General of Kenya National Qualifications Authority (KNQA).
This review process involved collaboration with experts from the International Labour Organization (ILO), Federation of Kenya Employers (FKE), and Kenya National Federation of Jua Kali Associations.
Dr. Kande emphasized that the RPL policy will harmonize the national curriculum development approach to produce high-quality skilled human resources that align with the needs of the job market.
She stressed the importance of academia and industry working together to tailor curricula to meet industry demands, ensuring that courses remain relevant to the current and future job market requirements.
