KDF recruitment kicks off amid warnings against graft

The recruitment process for joining the Kenya Defence Forces nationwide commenced on August 28. Precautions were given against corruption during this process.

The Ministry of Defence sent cautionary text messages to mobile users, advising them to be vigilant against fraudulent activities before the recruitment event.

The Ministry emphasized that the selection of KDF Cadets/Recruits would take place between August and September 2023. The message underlined that buying calling letters should be avoided, as recruitment is free. A helpline number was provided to report any fraudulent activity.

In response to reports of scammers demanding payments of up to Sh400,000 for calling letters, the Ministry joined forces with the police and other stakeholders to tackle the issue.

Vice Chief of Defence Forces Lt General Johnah Mwangi presided over the event in Nairobi, using the opportunity to warn against attempts at bribery during the recruitment process.

Emphasis was placed on the need for fairness and transparency in the recruitment drive for qualified Kenyan youth. The Defence Cabinet Secretary, Aden Duale, committed to selecting military officers from all regions of the country and cautioned parents against paying money to secure slots.

Concerns arose that certain marginalized groups might be excluded from the recruitment process.

The Ministry announced a new round of recruitment into the KDF for August and September 2023.

Various positions were available for recruitment, including General Service Officer (GSO) Cadets, Specialist Officers, General Duty Recruits, Tradesmen/women, and Defence Forces Constables.

Specific criteria for Specialist Officers and Tradesmen/women required online applications, with a deadline of August 20.

Shortlisted candidates would receive notifications through print media from September 17 to 24, 2023.

Another group of recruits would be enlisted at different centers from August 28 to September 8.

Concerns regarding the high demand and potential corruption during the process were expressed.

Past instances of recruitment have led to individuals being deceived into paying for fake letters, prompting the need for warnings.

Multiple agencies, including the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission, human rights organizations, and the police, would oversee and monitor the recruitment process.
