KDF Among Top 100 Militaries Globally, Egypt Tops Africa- Survey

Nairobi – The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) have made their mark in global military rankings, securing a spot among the top 100 strongest armed forces worldwide, according to a recent survey.

As African nations confront growing threats from terrorism and insurgencies, many have prioritized investing in their defense systems for national safety.

A survey by Global Firepower highlights this trend, with Egypt leading Africa’s military strength.

Kenya’s Military Ranking: Where Does It Stand?

Kenya’s military strength has earned the KDF the 11th position in Africa and 83rd globally, showcasing the country’s defense capabilities.

Global Firepower’s annual assessment considers factors such as military personnel, finances, resources, and strategic location.

Egypt holds the top spot in Africa, followed by Algeria, Nigeria, South Africa, and Ethiopia in the top five, as they invest heavily in countering terrorism and maritime security.

Why Are African Nations Focusing on Military Spending?

Africa is dealing with a range of internal issues, like terrorism, insurgencies, and civil conflicts, prompting governments to prioritize military development.

Countries like Egypt, Algeria, and Nigeria are strengthening their forces to protect borders, stabilize regions, and safeguard national interests.

Egypt leads Africa’s military build-up, spending over $6 billion on defense due to rising security threats in the Red Sea and the Mediterranean. Its military includes 440,000 active personnel, nearly 1,100 aircraft, and an extensive naval fleet, including submarines and frigates.

Algeria, with the highest defense budget in Africa at nearly $25 billion, and Nigeria, ranked third in Africa, have also increased military spending to boost their defense capabilities.

Which African Militaries Are Struggling?

While many African countries are advancing their military power, others face challenges. South Africa, once a leading military force, has fallen in rankings due to a decline in air and naval power.

The weakest militaries in Africa, as identified by Global Firepower, include Benin, Central African Republic, Somalia, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Gabon, Senegal, and Burkina Faso. Their struggles are mainly due to economic challenges, political instability, and limited defense funding.

Missing KDF Officer Found Alive

Earlier reports stated that the family of KDF officer Abdullahi Issa Ibrahim had accepted his death after receiving a death certificate from the KDF. Ibrahim’s daughter, Kadra Abdullahi, said the family had already held his burial ceremony.

However, confusion arose when Ibrahim called his family from Somalia, informing them that he was alive and needed assistance.
