Kabogo Threatens to “Switch Off” Social Media Users Amid Coffin Controversy

On Monday, January 20, ICT Cabinet Secretary William Kabogo stated that the government can block individuals who misuse social media. However, he emphasized that the government does not want to take such drastic measures.

While visiting KBC, the CS highlighted recent cases where some Kenyans used artificial intelligence to create images of leaders in coffins, which led the government to call for tighter regulations on social media platforms.

Kabogo urged Kenyans to use social media responsibly, stating, “Let us be responsible. We don’t want to resort to shutting people down because we can do so.” He also questioned why people would create and share coffin images of others when they could simply express their opinions directly and engage in a conversation instead.

He stressed the importance of respecting others’ rights, even on social media. He pointed out that while Kenyans have the freedom of expression, there are limits to this freedom when it begins to infringe on the rights of others. “Your freedom ends where mine begins,” Kabogo said, underscoring the need for a balance between expressing opinions and respecting others.

The CS also mentioned the government’s concern over the spread of pornography on social media. He emphasized that the right to freedom of expression must be balanced with responsibility, and the government does not want to stifle discussions. However, he added, “We need to understand the rules of the game” and be mindful of how our actions affect others.

Following the coffin image incident, the government has held meetings with social media companies to push for stricter regulations and the enforcement of rules. As part of these efforts, the Ministry of Interior has instructed these companies to set up physical offices in Kenya to ensure better oversight.
