Junior School To Be Hosted In Nearest Day School
The decision to move Junior Secondary School (JSS) lessons to nearby day secondary schools has been met with widespread appreciation. This move is seen as an urgent response to the concerning state of junior secondary schools currently located within primary schools across the nation.
The situation is expected to become even more critical when the students in grade seven transition to grade eight in 2024. The primary issue plaguing JSS is the lack of adequate infrastructure. In fact, the majority of elementary schools lack the essential resources needed to facilitate practical activities, which are a vital prerequisite of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
This deficiency means that the learning experience and achievement of students are hindered by the absence of practicals. Another significant challenge is the shortage of teachers in JSS schools. The current number of new teacher recruits does not adequately address the growing population of learners.

The government’s commitment to achieving a 100 percent transition from grade 6 requires the recruitment of additional teachers, a situation complicated by the fact that over 40,000 teachers serving under internships have not been absorbed into the system. Many of these intern teachers are already demotivated due to their workload and the significant tax deductions from their monthly stipends.
Furthermore, the deplorable conditions in many primary schools have also demoralized teachers, particularly since most of them were trained to teach learners between the ages of 15 to 20 years. JSS teachers have expressed concerns about the deteriorating relationship between them and school administrators, stemming from issues of inferiority complex.
In light of these challenges, it appears prudent for the government to relocate these schools to adjacent secondary schools, ensuring that students have adequate access to laboratory facilities. Additionally, this move will allow secondary school instructors to provide specialized services, potentially resulting in cost savings for the government.
Moreover, the funds earmarked for the construction of new JSS facilities could be redirected to hire more instructors who can better support the implementation of the curriculum. This shift has the potential to address many of the current issues faced by JSS, improving the educational experience for students.
