Teachers of Junior Secondary School (JSS) are required to join the Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) as of this academic year.

This comes after the Teachers Service Commission issued a new directive about the matter, which can be found here.

According to the TSC, starting today all teachers who work in schools that fall under the junior secondary school sector will be required to be members of Knut.

There are rumours circulating that the labour disputes that these instructors were facing had been resolved.

It is important to be aware that Knut is a union that has traditionally represented teachers working in primary schools.

On the other side, the Kenya organisation of Post primary Education Teachers, or Kuppet for short, is another organisation that works within the education sector and represents teachers working in secondary schools as well as other environments.

The teachers working in junior secondary schools will pay the same monthly dues and contribute 2% of their base income to the Knut union, just like their existing counterparts working in primary schools do.

The month of April brought remuneration for a significant portion of the teachers who worked in junior secondary schools.
