Muranga senator and majority chief whip Irungu Kang’ata is a man in hiding with his phone switched off, being the centre of the BBI storm following a six-page letter to the president saying that during his survey during the Christmas holidays in the Mount Kenya region, which is president Kenyatta’s backbone, he concluded that BBI was unpopular stating that only 2 out of 10 people support it while 2 others were indifferent with it as the remaining 6 opposed it with which the majority were the youth and women.
Even though the letter went ahead to say that the survey was not scientific and most of his respondents came from Muranga county, he said that the samples were quiet enough for him to make a logical conclusion. In a part of his letter, he proposed a parallel BBI heading structure headed by a quasi-politician established to manage MPs, or maybe a well-resourced office like that of a secretary-general or even the president could also take personal charge of the process in the region.
Kangata’s letter to the president has been applauded by other state figures such as Machakos Governor Dr Alfred Mutua saying that other ten governors from the central region who were saying all is well were not telling Kenyans the right thing as Kangatas views should give them the challenge to popularize the BBI agenda in their backyards to ensure that it succeeds.
Other leaders, however, have rubbished out Kangata’s letter saying that he is not Mount Kenya’s spokesperson and he is just partially seeking attention and that he is inexperienced politically and only want to run with the current political trends. Other parliamentarians have said that Kenyans should just wait as BBI is at a signature verification process to assembly then parliament in which after that they will start its popularization.
