Incidents reported on day one of KCPE, KPSEA exams

Officials in Kitui are intensifying their search for a 17-year-old girl who disappeared from her home on Monday morning. She was supposed to take her KCPE exams at a local primary school in Kitui but went missing along with her three-month-old baby, consequently missing her exams. The incident was reported to Kabati police station, and efforts to locate her have commenced.

On the first day of the KCPE/KPSEA exams, several other incidents were reported. Three female students were said to have written their exams in hospitals after giving birth. One student gave birth at the Mother and Child Hospital in Wote, Makueni, and was taking her exams at the facility under guard. Another 17-year-old candidate from Kitui West wrote her exams from the hospital after giving birth. A similar situation occurred in Mwingi when a candidate went into labor and was rushed to the hospital to deliver safely, where arrangements were made for her to take the examination.

In a different scenario, a male grade six pupil from Ngumbwa Primary School in Mutitu had to take his KPSEA exam at Kitui County Referral Hospital due to a leg fracture.

It’s worth noting that 13 inmates from Naivasha GK prison missed out on the examinations on Monday. Some were released or transferred to other penal institutions. The prison had registered a total of 54 candidates for the national exams, with 21 serving life sentences.

These incidents occur as approximately 1.4 million candidates are taking the last KCPE exams under the 8-4-4 curriculum, which has been in place since 1985. The system, criticized for its pressure on students, is being replaced with the Competency-Based Curriculum. The second cohort of candidates is also taking the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) exams under CBC.
