ICT Ministry to Establish laboratories Across Schools to Boost Digital Literacy

In an effort to increase digital literacy and improve access to digital skills among children and the general public, the government has established digital laboratories for schools across the nation.

To facilitate the training, the programme targets secondary schools, colleges, technical vocational education training (TVET), vocational training centres (VTC), and local ICT centres.

Across the nation, 23,000 devices will be put in institutions.

Eliud Owalo, the ICT Cabinet Secretary, stated that the government’s aim for bottom-up economic development depends on the success of the digital literacy programme.

The youth and other populations at the base of the pyramid, according to Owalo, stand to gain from the laboratories.

As the government works to speed up access to the internet through the digital superhighway project, he said, “this initiative targets to enhance digital literacy and skills among the youth and members of the public.”

He claimed that the action was in line with the government’s ambitions to use technology to streamline and improve its operations while also digitising its services.

Speaking during the opening of a digital lab at Maseno School in Kisumu County, he remarked that more services are expected to be posted on the E-citizen platform by the end of the year, bringing the total number of services that have been digitised to over 6,000.

The CS also mentioned that they are establishing a total of 25, 000 free public wifi hotspots distributed evenly around the nation with a focus on small-scale entrepreneurs and youth markets.

He urged them to engage in e-commerce by utilising the digital training facilities and labs, as well as the free public wifi that has been established at many markets and bus stops across the nation.

The CS also mentioned that in order to make e-commerce a reality, the government was implementing a national addressing system and digital identification cards.

Hon. Fred Outa, a former senator from Kisumu, praised the ICT Ministry for its forceful efforts to put the nation on the map of the world.

ICT has turned the globe into a global village, according to Outa, the Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS) at the Ministry of Blue Economy, Mining, and Maritime Affairs.

Thanks to ICT, you may currently stay comfortable in your home and be aware of events taking place all over the world, added Outa.

Outa further advised the pupils to utilise the digital lab for research and learning.

With the help of this instrument, he continued, “you can learn about the history and cultures of various nations and be connected to the entire world.”

ICT has been given top priority by President William Ruto’s administration, he claimed, and Kenyans must seize this chance to advance.
