“I want to stay”: Chelsea midfielder’s hope for a breakthrough season under Pochettino

Carney Chukwuemeka desires to remain at Chelsea and contend for his position despite uncertainty regarding his future.

Carney Chukwuemeka, a young Chelsea midfielder, confesses he wants to remain at the club and compete for a starting position, but admits he is uncertain about his immediate future.

The England junior international, who was acquired from Aston Villa for £20 million last summer, had a disappointing debut campaign at Stamford Bridge.

Last season, the 19-year-old made only 15 appearances in all competitions for the Blues, totaling only 362 minutes on the field (Transfermarkt).

Here is what Chukwuemeka said prior to Chelsea’s preseason tour of the United States to bolster preparations for the upcoming season (h/t Sky Sports, via Birmingham Mail):

“[Pochettino]’s come in and said that he sees the talent that he wants to develop and help develop me. Whether that’s in a month or six months, but I want to stay and prove to everyone what I can do, and help the club. At the end of the day we’ll sit down and come together to decide what’s best for me.”

These quotes indicate that, although the player is confident in his ability to improve under Mauricio Pochettino, he is also considering his future with the club.

As a result of Chelsea selling numerous midfielders and not acquiring any replacements, there is leeway for players like Chukwuemeka to claim a starting position.

Chelsea acquired Chukwuemeka from Aston Villa last summer.

The 19-year-old can function as a number 10, an attacking number eight, or a winger. He is technically proficient with the ball and does not shy away from physical midfield confrontations.

If Pochettino employs the 4-2-3-1 formation, Chukwuemeka may be able to occupy the number 10 position behind the striker. This would enable the manager to play Christopher Nkunku as a number nine and flank him with wingers.

To return to Chukwuemeka, he is a talented player who requires time and guidance to achieve success in a Chelsea uniform. Under the current manager, there is optimism that the Englishman will shine and improve.
