How CBC Subjects Will be Merged by KICD in New Plan

Five CBC subjects in elementary school will be consolidated in accordance with the recommendation made by the Presidential Working Party on Education Reforms that the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) minimise learning subjects.

In primary school, home science, health education, and integrated science will all be combined into one course.

The concept poses a danger to the current system of education, which treats each of the three study areas as a separate subject.

The curriculum designer is also considering integrating social studies and life skills, which are viewed by the CBC as separate subjects.

Subjects in the lower primary will be cut from nine to seven, in the upper primary from twelve to eight, in the junior school from fourteen to nine, in the preschool to five, and in the senior by seven.

According to Charles Ong’ondo, CEO of KICD, the subjects being combined share many similar themes.

According to Prof. Ongondo, “Upon closer inspection, we discovered there are some concepts that are related, and it is one of the areas we have considered for merging so that we can only have integrated science rather than integrated science and health education as two separate subjects.”

KICD is thinking about combining home science and health education to turn their material into integrated science, in a similar way to the primary level modifications.

The curriculum designer advises the student to select the ninth course based on their aptitude in that field, nevertheless.

Junior Secondary pupils will be studying 14 subjects in January, 12 of which are required.

The mandatory KICD curriculum calls for 45 lessons per week, each lasting 40 minutes.

Students will also have the chance to study English, Kiswahili, mathematics, integrated science, health education, pre-technical and pre-career social studies, religion, business studies, agriculture, life skills, physical education, sports, and foreign languages (German, French, and Mandarin). In addition to learning indigenous languages.

At KICD, a review team is now debating whether subject should be made optional.

He acknowledged that making topics optional would be greatly impacted by the number of resources needed.

“Resource availability is a consideration when deciding which subject to make optional. We are considering a few of these learning opportunities, but the nation is not yet prepared to deploy them in all schools, according to Ong’ondo.

The adjustments supported by Ong’ondo are not anticipated to have a substantial influence on the learning areas because CBC has not yet been implemented at the senior secondary level.
