Hope for Senior Interns As TSC Make This Pronouncement
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC), as mandated by the Kenyan constitution, holds a crucial role in overseeing various aspects of the teaching profession within the country. This includes responsibilities like teacher registration, recruitment, managing promotions and transfers, and ensuring timely salary disbursements.
TSC executives have been actively working to secure additional funding to address the growing teacher shortage and provide more career advancement opportunities in the teaching field. They are also advocating strongly for salary increases for primary and secondary school teachers in Kenya, recognizing and honoring their dedication and hard work.
A positive development for Kenyan teachers is that, since 2019, all teachers who start their careers as interns are legally certified as permanent, pensionable employees. This milestone significantly enhances job security and financial stability for these committed educators.
Furthermore, TSC initiated a recruitment drive in February of this year, bringing in around 20,000 trainee teachers, particularly for primary and secondary schools. This initiative aims to provide crucial support for the country’s transition to the new Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

While some of these newly hired teachers are still on probation, plans are in progress to ensure that all trainee teachers recruited in February will ultimately secure permanent positions with pensions. This change is expected to have a profound impact on the teaching job market in Kenya.
All trainee teachers currently working in primary and secondary schools as interns (Senior) are expected to receive formal letters confirming their transition to permanent, pensionable positions before the start of the 2024 school year and replacement of teachers.
TSC’s proactive and forward-thinking approach in securing Kenya’s educational future and ensuring the well-being of its dedicated teaching staff is evident through these initiatives.
