On the Higher Education Fund (HEF) website, just 23% of students with KUCCPS placements have requested support for their university education.

Charles Ringera, CEO of the Higher Education Loans Board (Helb), stated in an interview on Tuesday that the number of applications has not yet crossed 100,000.

“We need a critical mass of students to have applied for planning purposes… As of right now, we have 65,000 applications and 10,000 are coming in, according to Ringera.

The HELB CEO also revealed that students will be made aware of their funding groups if the government gets at least 100,000 applications.

We will have received 100,000 applications by next week, so we will already know how many students were allocated to the various financing categories, according to Ringera.

The head of the Loans Board also stated that the government will extend the deadline if there aren’t enough applications by a particular date.

Under the new funding scheme, the government has separated students who require financial aid into four groups: the weak, the desperately poor, the poor, and the less poor.

While students from middle- and upper-class households will still be eligible for loan support from HELB, students from low-income families will be given preference when it comes to scholarship distribution.

Students who did not submit a financial assistance application before the implementation of this new system must do so through this portal.
