HELB Revokes 57 Clearance Certificates, Publishes New List

The Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) has withdrawn clearance certificates from 57 Kenyan individuals. While the specific reasons were not disclosed, it’s customary for HELB to revoke these certificates if they were obtained illegally or issued in error.

In a statement released on Tuesday, HELB advised affected individuals to contact them or visit their website for more details. Those who have repaid their loans or didn’t receive a loan are granted these certificates.

The certificates have a dual purpose, enabling holders to secure employment and qualify for additional loans. Accessing these certificates through the eCitizen platform or the HELB portal is a straightforward process.

For those who haven’t met their loan repayment obligations but need a compliance certificate, they can make a one-time payment of Ksh4,500 or three monthly payments of Ksh1,500.

Employees should provide these certificates to their employers to prevent ongoing loan repayment deductions. During the hiring process, employers typically require various documents, including the HELB compliance certificate.

Candidates may also need documents from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), Credit Reference Bureau (CRB), Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), and the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI).

HELB loans primarily aim to assist students pursuing higher education. The government has recently implemented a new funding model based on students’ financial needs, categorizing them as vulnerable, less vulnerable, needy, or less needy.
