HELB Gives New Directive to Students who Missed Loan

More than 2,000 students who sought for assistance but lacked National Identity cards received clarification from the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) on August 14 regarding how the organisation will distribute funds.

According to a statement from Chief Executive Charles Ringera, the funds would be held back until the student has a legitimate ID. Both the student and their parents must submit their personal identity numbers when requesting a loan through HELB.

The HELB CEO emphasised that the board’s options are limited because it is illegal to extend loans to borrowers under the age of 18, as required by law.

“An ID is important for identifying the identity of the student, especially when they are repaying the loan,” the speaker continued.

The CEO additionally urged students to apply for the government-publicized subsidies, assuring them that there were plenty of resources available to fulfil their needs.

Ringera added to his trust in the new funding model by pointing out that it was put in place at the ideal time to guarantee that every student has access to the resources they need to advance their education.

A departure from the prior structure, he continued, is that the allocated money will still be available to the student if they choose to switch their programme of study or transfer to a different university.

In September, more than 285,698 students are anticipated to enrol in colleges and universities. The CEO of HELB emphasised that all students would be catered to, thus dispelling rumours that some students could be left out.

According to the new funding model, pupils are divided into four categories: vulnerable, severely needy, needy, and less needy.
