Grade 4 Pupil Dies At A Quarry While Harvesting Sand

A Grade 4 pupil and a woman died on Monday at a quarry while harvesting sand in the Kashiani area of Bamburi in Kisauni. The 12-year-old girl identified as Samiha Mwalimu was a pupil at Kashiani Primary School.

The woman who died was identified as Mwanajumaa Keah. The pupil’s mother Salama Karisa was at the quarry when the incident occurred. She sustained injuries and is currently being treated at Coast General Hospital.

The pupil had followed her mother, a smallscale sand seller, who had gone to pick sand from the excavation site when it caved in at around 7 am.

Most families in Kashiani depend on sand collection from the quarry. Deputy county commissioner Jamleck Mbuba announced that the quarry has been shut down until investigations are over.

Mbuba stated that the security officials are in consultation with the experts to determine the situation before the next action is taken.

“The place remains a scene of a crime and no any would step there. We have also notified a team of experts, including the county government, as investigations continue,” he said.
