A pupil from Nyamare primary school in Kisii South was knocked down and killed by a hit-and-run vehicle on his way to collect a levy of Ksh. 60.
Furious parents and locals stormed the school protesting the death of the grade 2 pupil, Emmanuel Barongo aged six years, blaming the headteacher for the incident.
The school headteacher is said to have sent him home after his parents failed to pay 60 bobs. The teacher was also blamed for sending pupils home regularly over non-payment of the levies or lacking personal effects.
Learning was paralyzed with the pupils leaving for their homes. Area OCPD Charles Manchinji confirmed the incident saying the investigation had been launched over the incident.
According to the OCPD, the section of the road where the accident occurred is known as a ‘black spot.’ He vowed to engage the ministry concerned to put bumps to prevent more deaths.
The pupil’s body was moved to Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary.
