Govt To Deploy 1300 TVET Trainers

After a successful recruitment campaign, the Ministry of Education will dispatch 1,300 trainers to Technical, Vocational Education, and Training (TVET) programs nationwide in September of this year.

Dr. Esther Muoria, the Principal Secretary (PS) of the State Department for TVET, mentioned that the trainer recruitment was concluded, and they’re awaiting the final report from the Public Service Commission (PSC) before deployment begins.

During the conclusion of a week-long TVET principals training organized by the Kenya School of TVET (KSTVET) in Kisumu County, Dr. Muoria shared these details and reaffirmed the State Department for TVET’s commitment to deploying assistant principals to address shortages in TVET institutions.

In March 2023, PSC invited applications from qualified diploma, higher national diploma, and degree holders for Vocational and Technical Trainer positions in 220 institutions across the country.

Dr. Muoria highlighted the importance of retraining TVET managers in financial management and governance, essential for shaping the institutions’ future.

She reported a successful partnership between the Ministry of Education and KSTVET, training 1,896 TVET faculty and staff members over the past year, reaching 60% of the intended target group. The training covered a diverse range of roles for a comprehensive approach.

Participants included principals, deputy principals, registrars, heads of departments, finance officers, auditors, accountants, human resource officers, and facility managers.

Dr. Muoria supported the government’s new funding approach for higher education, aiming to enhance equity in accessing TVET and university education. She assured comprehensive support for all students within this new funding model.

She urged principals to assist incoming freshmen in securing admission for the September 2023 intake to qualify for state sponsorship.

Preparations are underway to welcome new trainees scheduled for the September intake. Dr. Muoria also instructed the creation of a support desk to assist trainees facing challenges in accessing or finalizing their applications for Government scholarships and Higher Education Loans Board (HELB).
