Gov’t Has Released Sh.16 Billion School Capitation

The Principal Secretary of Basic Education, Belio Kipsang, appeared before the Public Accounts Committee at Parliament on August 24, 2023. The Ministry of Education has announced that it will release Sh16 billion in funding next week, which will come as a relief to school administrators.

This decision was prompted by concerns raised by headteachers and principals, who warned of financial difficulties that could disrupt exam preparations.

Belio Kipsang outlined the allocation of funds, with junior schools receiving Sh1.75 billion and primary schools getting Sh1.56 billion. The majority of the funding, Sh16.24 billion, will go toward supporting secondary schools under the Free Day Secondary Education program.

Kipsang emphasized that these funds, totaling Sh16,249,982,722.28 billion, will be disbursed to public primary, junior, and secondary schools to ensure the smooth operation of educational activities.

Kipsang assured schools that the funds would be transferred to their accounts by next week to facilitate uninterrupted learning. Additionally, the government has prohibited schools from conducting any activities on their premises during the third term, which began on August 28. This term is scheduled to run until October 27, preceding the KCPE and KCSE national examinations set to commence on October 30.

School administrators expressed concerns that the financial strain could disrupt school operations and impact exam preparations. Omboko Milemba, the chairman of Kuppet, has written to Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu requesting the release of funds.

He has also urged Parliament to intervene in expediting the release of these funds.
