Gov’t Clarifies Reports on Changes in School Opening Date
The Ministry of Education has flagged a fake circular claiming that schools will reopen on Monday, August 22.
The George Mahoga-led ministry indicated in a statemate dated Wednesday, August 17, that the circular was a forgery and should be treated with contempt.
It was reiterated that the school year will resume on Thursday, August 18.
The Ministry acted after parents raised concerns about the fake circular, which was allegedly signed by Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha.
It was discovered that the circular had gone viral on social media, causing confusion among education stakeholders.
Students took a two-week break early in the month to allow the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to use schools as polling places.
However, due to delays in the release of presidential results, Magoha pushed the reopening of schools from August 15 to August 18. The announcement was made via a circular signed by the Chief Security Officer.
“I hereby convey the Government’s decision on the suspension of the re-opening of all Basic Education institutions with effect from Monday, August 15, 2022, until Thursday, August 18, 2022,” Magoha directed then.
Furthermore, in addressing the changes to the school calendar following the announcement by Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga that he would file a petition in court, Magoha assured parents that the school calendar would not be disrupted if there was a repeat election.
Given the short term, he stated that students would remain in school during the voting process.

Schools are currently in their second term, with students in Standard 8 and Form 4 expected to take national exams in November.
During the same time period, Grade Six students will take the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA).
