Govt Announces Schools Closing Date

The Ministry of Education has unveiled the third term school calendar in advance of the 2023 National Examinations. In a statement released on September 15th, Basic Education Principal Secretary, Dr. Bellio Kipsang, announced that schools will commence classes on October 30th. He advised parents to prepare accordingly and collaborate closely with teachers to ensure a smooth examination period for students.

“All schools began the Third Term of the 2023 academic calendar on August 28th, 2023, and this term is scheduled to continue until October 27th, 2023, in preparation for the national examinations season. During this time, school activities involving parents and other stakeholders are prohibited to allow for adequate preparations before the National Examinations commence on October 30th, 2023,” the statement emphasized.

Kipsang also highlighted that the government has implemented measures to ensure uninterrupted learning during the third term. Furthermore, the government is set to disburse the necessary capitation funds to schools to ensure the smooth execution of the academic calendar.

“The Ministry of Education has received Ksh16,249,982,722.28 Billion as capitation funds from The National Treasury to distribute to learners in public Primary, Junior, and Secondary schools,” the statement mentioned. Junior Secondary Schools will receive Ksh1.75 billion, Free Primary Education will receive Ksh1.56 billion, and Free Day Secondary Education will receive Ksh12.9 billion as part of this allocation.

The statement assured that the funds would be transferred to respective school accounts by September 20th, 2023, to support the effective delivery of targeted learning activities. Detailed breakdowns of the funds and guidelines for their responsible utilization have been sent to schools in accordance with government regulations.

In the 2022/2023 Financial Year, the Ministry of Education disbursed a total of Ksh89.4 billion as capitation for Primary, Junior, and Secondary School learning.
