Gov’t Announces Resumption of Schools in Three Counties

Thursday is the day that all primary and secondary schools in the counties of Kisumu, Mombasa, and Nairobi are to reopen for the day. This directive came from the government.

Cabinet Secretaries Kithure Kindiki (Interior) and Ezekiel Machogu (Education) released a statement saying that the government has taken steps to ensure that students are safe.

According to the announcement, “on the basis of the evaluation, it is hereby directed that all day primary and secondary schools in Nairobi, Mombasa, and Kisumu counties re-open for normal school activities on the 20th of July, 2023.”

It was stated there had been an assessment of the security situation in the counties and other parts of the country, and the appropriate security agencies had been established to protect students’ safety in educational institutions.

On Tuesday, the government made the announcement that, due to the aforementioned security risks, all primary and secondary schools in the aforementioned counties will be closed for the day.

According to a statement sent by the government on Tuesday, “the government has received credible security intelligence that criminal elements planning to unleash terror and violence on the public tomorrow intend to engage in armed skirmishes with security agencies around certain schools within Nairobi and Mombasa cities,”

The directive was followed by the schools. A previous spot check conducted by the Star found that several schools, including the Moi Avenue Primary School in Nairobi, had their gates closed.
