The Kenya Forest Service (KFS) recently announced that it is currently in the process of interviewing 4,000 Kenyans for the Green Army Program. This initiative aligns with President William Ruto’s agenda to achieve a 30% forest cover by 2023.

Under this program, selected young Kenyans will have the responsibility of planting an impressive 15 billion seedlings over a ten-year period. To break this down, the Green Army aims to plant and nurture 1.5 billion seedlings annually.

KFS disclosed that applications have been received, and interviews will take place on a yet-to-be-announced date in the coming weeks. They emphasized that no new applications will be accepted. Once the successful candidates are selected, they will be enlisted as nursery workers working under the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change.

These nursery workers will play a vital role in the national tree growing and ecosystem restoration program, involving tasks such as raising tree seedlings, planting trees, and engaging in silvicultural operations within forests, among other forestry-related duties.

To ensure the survival of the seedlings planted by the Green Army, KFS has outlined a comprehensive set of measures. These measures include regular monitoring, proper watering, protection from pests, and community engagement to encourage stewardship.

Furthermore, KFS has developed a Jaza Miti mobile application to track the progress of trees planted across the country.

During the launch of the 15-billion tree program in December 2022, President William Ruto highlighted that this initiative aims to reduce greenhouse emissions, halt deforestation, and restore 5.1 million hectares of deforested and degraded landscapes. According to KFS, there are currently 42.4 million seedlings available in nurseries, with 22 million of them ready for planting during the current rainy season.

The first task of the Green Army will be to ensure that over 21 million seedlings are planted in various parts of the country. This ambitious program holds great promise for Kenya’s environment and efforts to combat deforestation.
