West Pokot County Governor John Lonyangapuo has decried the shortage of teachers in the county saying that it was slowing down the pace of education standards in the County.
Speaking while launching the strategic plan for Kamito Secondary School Lonyangapuo said the current situation may affect national results. The governor said residents have embraced education and are thirsty for learning.
He stated that the current teacher shortage in the region staggers at 55 per cent. He, however, applauded the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) for improving the percentage from 75 per cent to the current 55 per cent. He noted that the percentage is not still enough.
He also noted that the region lacks enough facilities for learning due to the migratory patterns of the residents. Lonyangapuo stated that there is a need to consider marginalized regions first with West Pokot toping due to good results it posted last year’ national examination.
Lack of proper education has not only denied children their right to education but also employment opportunities. Outdated cultural practices that have hindered development in the region can as well articulated to the lack of proper education due to lack of facilities.
