If the government follows the suggestions made by the Presidential Working Party on Education Reform, parents would participate in an annual training programme built on the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

The group, which was directed by Prof. Raphael Munavu, recommended that the Ministry of Education and the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) assume the task of informing parents, guardians, carers, and the general public about their significant roles in the educational development of their children.

Munavu and his team emphasise the necessity of training as a key strategy to guarantee stakeholders’ active engagement in the CBC curriculum’s effective implementation in the thorough report sent to President William Ruto on August 1st.

The task committee, driven by parental concerns, emphasises that the advice is intended to address the widespread belief that parents should be more involved in their children’s academic endeavours.

Take-home tasks were overwhelmingly preventing students from engaging in other activities at home, according to the stakeholders’ opinions.

The report stated, in part, “It was also observed that parents perceived that teachers were demanding more items than were required for learning.”

One of the task force’s suggested changes focuses on improving parents’ digital literacy because they frequently have to help their kids with their homework. However, a small number of parents have complained about how time-consuming these assignments are.

In response, the task group urges parents to buy digital gadgets and get training on how to help their kids with schoolwork properly rather than just helping them.

“It was found that the majority of parents lacked access to the Internet or digital devices like cellphones that might have helped students find information online. We noted in the report that many parents could not afford the expense of downloading and printing educational materials.

In order to better align them with the changes in the school curriculum, the team also wants all teachers to enrol in year-long training.

The research stated that it was crucial for instructors to have updated training on the curriculum modifications.

“The Ministry of Education to develop guidelines on how all teachers who graduated before 2023 undergo a mandatory one-year retooling and upgrading programme for compliance with the curriculum change,” the study said in part.
