Government To Deploy 1,300 TVET Trainers This Month

Dr. Esther Muoria, the Principal Secretary (PS) of the State Department for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), recently announced the deployment of 1,300 trainers to TVET institutions across Kenya this month. This move comes after a successful recruitment exercise. Dr. Muoria made these announcements during her address at the closing ceremony of a week-long TVET Principals’ training organized by the Kenya School of TVET (KSTVET) in Kisumu County.

She also emphasized the commitment of the State Department to deploy Deputy Principals to address existing gaps in TVET institutions. These actions were in response to vacancies advertised by the Public Service Commission (PSC) in March 2023, seeking qualified Degree, Higher National Diplomas, or Diploma holders to fill trainer positions in 220 institutions spanning the 47 counties of Kenya.

Dr. Muoria stressed the importance of retraining TVET Managers in Financial Management and Governance, crucial aspects for the future of these institutions. She highlighted that the Ministry of Education, in collaboration with KSTVET, had already trained 1,896 TVET faculty and staff, representing 60% of the target population. This training encompassed various roles within the institutions, such as Principals, Deputy Principals, Registrars, Heads of Departments, Finance Officers, Auditors, Accountants, Human Resource Officers, and Facility Managers.

Furthermore, Dr. Muoria defended the new higher education funding model introduced by the government, emphasizing its potential to promote equitable access to TVET and university education. She assured that the government was committed to ensuring adequate support for all students under this new funding model, aiming to leave no one behind.

As a directive to TVET Principals, Dr. Muoria urged them to assist incoming students joining in September in applying for state sponsorship. She called for the establishment of a support desk to aid these students in accessing or completing their applications for government scholarships and the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB).

In summary, Dr. Esther Muoria, as the TVET PS, has outlined significant developments and initiatives aimed at strengthening TVET institutions in Kenya, from trainer deployments to retraining programs and equitable education access measures.
