Following multiple complaints and decrees from parents who are bearing the brunt of the deteriorating economy in the country occasioned by the Covid-19 pandemic, the government has finally come to their rescue by reducing secondary school fees by 8,500 shillings less.
This means national schools will now pay 45,054 shillings while extra county and county schools will pay 35,035 shillings.
“And we agreed having consulted his excellency the president and he conquered, and he said we should prorate downwards because the term is going to be nine weeks less. That is for the boarding schools.” Said Magoha.
“And the money, the government pays for everything except the food that the child is eating and the boarding. So if you are not boarding for nine weeks then there are savings. and if you are going to eat back in your house for the nine weeks you don’t have to pay at school.
Magoha further warned school heads against hiking fees when schools reopen.
“I have been shown fee situations where people are demanding that you go with five thousand shillings the first term in primary school before you go to school. That school is not yours, every child must go to school.
“The constitution says the primary school is free and compulsory. The same government pays school fees for all the children both in public and private schools pay examination fees for them.” The Education CS Magoha said.
Primary and secondary schools are set to reopen on July 26th for the first time of 2021 which will last only 30 weeks compared to the traditional school calendar that runs for about 39 weeks between July and March next year.
“I would now want to say that we are going yet into another journey of the unknown. The year that is starting on the 26th of July and the second of august.
“The term that we have just completed ladies and gentlemen did not have any major issues with Covid despite the fact that it was at the peak of the so-called third wave and now we are waiting for the fourth wave.” Said Magoha.
The calendar is an adjustment of the traditional January to December school cycle that was altered by the closure of learning institutions in March last year due to the covid-19 pandemic.
Term one will begin on July 26th and learners will have another one week break from October 2nd to October 10th before they open for the second term the following day. The term will run until December 23rd.
