KooGood News To Examiner Teachers As MPs Give This Directives To KNEC And Treasury Ahead Of Exams
The Kenya National Examination body is responsible for conducting final examinations in primary, secondary schools, and colleges, which serve the purpose of student placement and certification.
Due to a lack of its own workforce, the agency typically hires teachers employed by the Teachers Service Commission to grade and oversee exams, compensating them for their services.
Recently, examiners have voiced their dissatisfaction with delayed payments, which have negatively impacted their motivation. For instance, those who participated in the 2022 exams, released earlier this year, had to wait until August to receive their compensation without any accrued interest.

This issue has garnered the attention of the education committee in the National Assembly, led by Tinderet Member of Parliament, Honorable Julius Melly. The committee has consequently urged the Ministry of National Treasury and Planning to provide funding to the Kenya National Examination Council in advance.
Melly believes that this proactive measure will enable the council to adequately prepare for exams in advance, preventing a repeat of the delays experienced this year. He stated, “We are now demanding that the National Treasury allocates resources so that the Examiners are paid in time immediately after they are done with the work. We have made it clear to the council to not ever do this without the money. We have also told Treasury to not ever engage the Examiners without the money being released to Knec,” as quoted by the People Daily.
This proposed action would be welcome news for teachers, as their unions frequently raise concerns about delayed payments to examiners. Whether the parties involved will fulfill their assigned mandates to avoid a recurrence remains to be seen.
