Students from Ganze Girls’ High School were sent home on Sunday for a one-week break.
This comes after they refused to enter their dormitories following the suicide death of a colleague on Friday morning.
On Saturday evening, the school administration learned of the girls’ plan to leave the school at night, and police officers were called to put a stop to it.
After a crisis meeting involving the administration, the board of management, the area MP, and the Ganze sub-county education officer, the school was closed.
Ganze MP Teddy Mwambire stated that the students had been psychologically tortured and that the break would allow them to heal.
“What happened will linger in their minds, but the break will be beneficial,” Mwambire said.
The students discovered a Form 4 student hanging from a clothesline crossbar on Friday morning.
The student hanged herself with a bedsheet.
The body was taken to the Kilifi County Hospital Mortuary for a postmortem examination.
Schoolmates described the girl as a quiet student who mostly kept to herself.
She displayed no signs of mental illness at home or at school.
She was scheduled to take her national exam early next year.
