Gachagua Blasts Govt Over Richard Otieno’s Murder

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has condemned the murder of Molo activist Richard Otieno, who was killed by unknown assailants on Saturday.

In a statement posted on his official X account, Gachagua called for a prompt investigation to ensure that those responsible are apprehended and held accountable. He criticized the government for its silence on the matter, stressing that Kenya cannot afford to overlook such incidents.

Gachagua expressed his sorrow over Otieno’s death, urging for national unity and asserting that the murder highlights the current administration’s attempts to silence opposing voices.

“As we mourn this promising young man, a dedicated human rights advocate, we demand justice. His killers must face the law,” Gachagua said.

The former Deputy President, recognized for his outspoken criticism of the government, cautioned that political intolerance and repression in Kenya are escalating to alarming levels.

“The brutal killing of Richard Otieno in Molo shows a disturbing attempt to instill fear and silence critics, following failed abductions,” Gachagua added.

He wondered how a great nation like Kenya could be descending into chaos, where even children and women feel threatened.

Gachagua also extended his sympathies to Otieno’s family and the people of Molo, commending Otieno for his commitment to justice.

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino also aimed at the government, accusing it of shielding the murderers. “The DCI shouldn’t have to investigate Richard Otieno’s death, as the killer is already known,” he stated.

Owino demanded that the leader responsible be held accountable and charged with Otieno’s murder.

Otieno was attacked by unknown assailants on Saturday night while returning home from a bar. Reports indicate that the attackers struck him in the head with an axe, killing him instantly.
