Focus on Grade 3 Literacy, Machogu Implores Teachers
Mr. Ezekiel Machogu, the Cabinet Secretary (CS) for Education, has emphasized the importance of teachers ensuring that students master literacy and numeracy skills by the end of the third grade. He highlighted that foundational learning is a critical stage, as it becomes challenging for students to acquire these skills after entering the fourth grade.
Officials from the Kenya Primary School Heads Association (KEPHA), led by Chairman Mr. Johnson Nzioka, paid a courtesy call to Mr. Machogu, with Dr. Belio Kipsang, the Principal Secretary for Basic Education, also present.
Mr. Machogu emphasized that teachers are vital stakeholders in the government’s education reform initiatives. He pointed out that the successful implementation of the competency-based curriculum (CBC) hinges on the role of teachers and their ability to instill confidence in the CBC system.
Mr. Machogu stressed the importance of placing instructors in northeastern classrooms to prevent potential radicalization of children in the area. He mentioned the government’s decision to eliminate the cluster requirement, which would ensure a stable supply of teachers for schools across the country, including the North Eastern Region and the North Rift.

Furthermore, Mr. Machogu noted that reducing the number of subjects in the curriculum was intended to ease the academic burden on students and was within the Ministry’s granted authority.
Dr. Kipsang raised the possibility of a two-month school break for students, which has been in place since 2016. Mr. Nzioka expressed his support for the competency-based curriculum (CBC) and welcomed the recommendation to reduce the number of subjects, as suggested by parents to the Presidential Working Party on Education Reform (PWPER), in order to alleviate the curriculum burden on students.
