First Lady Unveils a Program that will benefit 89,000 Schools

On Thursday, First Lady Rachel Ruto launched the First Lady Mazingira Award, focusing on schools in all 47 counties. The launch took place at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC), where she explained that this program aims to acknowledge students involved in environmentally friendly projects. It’s worth noting that both public and private school students will be eligible for this new award.

Rachel emphasized the importance of this initiative, particularly in light of the government’s efforts to address climate change effects. This event followed President William Ruto’s hosting of the Africa Climate Summit.

Rachel expressed the belief that the future of the nation depends on everyone’s actions, and what we do today will significantly impact future generations, especially our young learners, to whom the future belongs.

She officially introduced the First Lady Mazingira Award at the KICC in Nairobi, specifying that it will target learners, including those with special needs, in over 89,000 public and private primary and secondary schools across all 47 counties in Kenya.

Rachel’s message was clear: young students have the potential to influence and make a difference in society, complementing the government’s efforts in its climate change program, which includes the ambitious 15 billion tree planting plan.

She concluded by stating that the power to shape our world resides in each of us, especially in our young people. Empowering them to become leaders in environmental protection is crucial for the benefit of future generations.

During the launch event, Rachel also unveiled the award’s logo and tagline, while recognizing students who participated in a logo contest. The specific cash rewards for this award have yet to be disclosed.
