Fired Teacher Who Impregnated A Pupil Sets Himself On Fire
After receiving a termination letter, a teacher at Magemo Primary School in Webuye, Bungoma County, doused himself in petroleum and set himself on fire early Friday morning.
The teacher’s job was terminated after he allegedly impregnated one of the school’s students.
The teacher, Wycliffe Akeve, entered the school through the fence around 7 a.m., according to school watchman Jack Barasa.
“The teacher arrived in school around 7:40 am and gained entry through the backdoor,” the school watchman noted.
“He started conversion with a fellow teacher and informed him that he wanted to see the headteacher. Shortly after, he locked the door to the headteacher and deputy’s offices and barricaded himself on the verandah leading to the staffroom.”
He allegedly then joked around with other teachers before locking himself up in the staff room and committing the act.
The teacher is currently being treated at a Bungoma hospital for burn injuries.
MCA Mihuu Ward Violet Makhanu and Webure East DEO Sospeter Were have since demanded that the law be followed and that the teacher be charged.
Parents, for their part, expressed concern about their children’s safety, urging teachers to serve as role models.
While confirming the incident, Webuye East DCC Peter Yego warned teachers against having similar relationships with students, stating that action would be taken against those found culpable.
Offences and Misconducts that can lead to teacher interdiction by TSC.
Teachers who commit any of the following offences may face disciplinary action from the Teachers Service Commission:
a) Immoral behaviour, including but not restricted to:
- Sodomy
- Sexual intercourse
- Sexual harassment
- Lesbianism and
Required Evidence
- Handwritten statements from victims or witnesses
- Exhibits such as
- love letters
- court proceedings
- investigation reports by heads of institutions, county Directors or Sub-County Directors
- Minutes of BOM following interviews with pupils or students, teachers and any other
- witnesses
- photographs
- gifts
- agreements
- County discipline minutes.
b) Professional misconduct including but not restricted to:
- Desertion Incitement and
- Negligence of duty
- Chronic absenteeism
- Lateness to duty
- Insubordination
c) Infamous conduct including but not restricted to:
- Fighting
- Chronic absenteeism
- Drunkenness
- Conduct or behaviour which in the opinion of the Commission contradicts the spirit and tenor of Chapter six of the Constitution
- Mismanagement, misappropriation and embezzlement of public funds
- Forgery/ presentation of forged documents
- Any other act of conduct that is incompatible with the teaching profession.
