Ezekiel Machogu Has Said JSS Teachers Will be Paid This Month

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) employed over 30,000 teachers in junior secondary early this year. These teachers have worked for three months but almost 50 percent of the teachers have not received their pay yet.

Today, Friday May 5, 2023, Education CS Ezekiel Machogu has announced that these teachers will receive their salaries this month.

While the CS was appearing before the National Assembly plenary for questioning, the CS regretted the fact that over 50 percent of the teachers have not been paid yet for three consecutive months by the Teachers Service Commission.

Since these teachers were deployed in February, some of them have never received their salaries yet.

Apologies

“I want to apologize to our teachers for the delay in payments. There are those that we have been unable to pay. As of today when I discussed with the CEO of the Teachers Service Commission, it was affirmed that over 50 percent of the newly employed teachers have been paid and the other 50 percent, I’m getting information from the feed so we can pay them. I assure you that funds are available and we will be able to pay expeditiously,” said Machogu.

This came after the nominated MP Sabina Chege questioned the CS over delayed payment of the JSS teachers. Machogu responded and said the delay was occasioned by the delay in reporting of teachers to their various stations.

From a spot-check that was conducted the media, revealed that some teachers reported to their stations in February and others in March.

Machogu explained saying that the teachers were supposed to report to their work stations 30 days after receiving their posting letters. Headteachers were supposed to disseminate their data regarding their reporting dates in those stations.

“After posting them, we rely on information from the principals on the special days that they report so we are able to prepare payment. Some began their work later than others which might have caused the delays in processing their salaries. I however want to assure them that they will be paid on time,” he said.

The commission took to its Facebook page on Monday and assure those teachers who did not receive the salary that they are working to ensure that they are paid this month.

“We apologize for any delays that might have been occasioned by late reporting of teachers to their stations or delayed submission of requisite documents. All efforts ate being made to effect all salaries in May,” read part of the statement from the commission.

Machogu was also responding to Isiolo Mp, Bonaya Golo where he stated that there are plans to equip the schools with laboratories and equipments in order to cater for the increasing number.

“We have challenges such as a shortage of laboratories and classrooms. We are in consultations with the world bank- our development partner and have agreed that the funding that we are likely to get will go towards navigating the infrastructural problem,” Machogu Said.
