Equity CEO Installed as Chancellor Of Open University Of Kenya

James Mwangi, the CEO of Equity Group, has been named the first Chancellor of the Open University of Kenya (OUK) by President William Ruto.

Professor Ezra Maritim has been appointed by the head of state to serve as chair of the university council.

On Thursday, August 3, during the charter award ceremony at the beginning of the nation’s first virtual university in Konza Technopolis in Machakos, Ruto made the declaration.

The president stated that Mwangi has demonstrated his dedication to developing education in Kenya in his justification for choosing him to lead the organisation.

“To my friend James Mwangi, I apologise for not giving you the chance to decline; I did so because I could see how passionate you are about education. We are quite proud of your performance and I am sure that we will be much more so under your leadership as chancellor of the Open University of Kenya. The Wings to Fly programme has offered thousands of young Kenyans the chance to pursue an education.

Mwangi was appointed after his ten-year term as chancellor of Meru University ended on July 20.

The head of Equity thanked everyone in his acceptance speech and promised to bring experience to the university.

“I want to express my gratitude to you (President Ruto) for providing me the chance to lead this brand-new institution as its first chancellor. I accept your assignment to carry out this job for this nation on your behalf with humility because I am humbled by it. I’ll bring the knowledge I’ve gained to this new university, I can guarantee you of that,” he stated.

Mwangi, a professional accountant, presently holds the positions of managing director and CEO of Equity Group.

From 2007 to 2019, he was also the Kenya Vision 2030 delivery board’s inaugural chairman.

The government hopes to recruit more than 7,000 students in the Open University of Kenya’s first intake, which is scheduled to begin next month.
