Education Sector Gets boost of Sh800m from UK Govt

UK Govt offers Kenya Sh800m To Boost Education

The United Kingdom has committed to donating Sh800 million to support education and facilitate the implementation of presidential task force reforms. Foreign Secretary James Cleverly announced this initiative at the Eastlands Library on Tuesday, emphasizing the contribution’s role in realizing closer partnerships and aiding education reforms, particularly the presidential task force reforms.

On September 29, 2022, President William Ruto appointed the Presidential Working Party on Education Reform (PWPER). Their mandate was to compile a comprehensive report covering all the Terms of Reference, titled “Transforming Education, Training, and Research for Sustainable Development in Kenya.” Subsequently, in August, the Presidential Working Party on Education Reforms submitted their report to the President.

Following this, Ruto directed the Ministry of Education to initiate education reforms within the specified timeframe. Some of the recommendations put forward by the committee included reducing the number of learning areas in different educational levels and increasing school capitation in various categories.

For instance, the Kenyan Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) proposed reducing learning areas, and the committee suggested adjustments to capitation and grants to improve the education system.

However, Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu has temporarily suspended the implementation of the presidential working group’s recommendations, pending approval from Parliament. According to Machogu, the rollout of these reforms is contingent on parliamentary approval.
