Education Ministry Orders Fees Refund For Secondary Schools To Parents.
Director of Secondary Education Paul Kibet has said anything collected above the revised school fees guidelines be refunded or treated as prepayment of fees for continuing students.
Kibet further warned that any unreported cases of a school charging illegal levies will draw sanctions on the responsible officer. This comes after the ministry of education ordered the county directors to report schools that are charging illegal fees with immediate effect.
The Ministry of Education had on 16 June 2021 issued revised fees guidelines to schools. The recommended fees for national schools was set at 45 054 shillings, county schools at 35 035 shillings while day schools were free.
However numerous complaints continue to emerge as parents, sponsors of needy students and the general public regarding claiming that schools still charge illegal levies.
According to reports, schools recover these levies upfront before crediting money paid as fees into the students’ fees accounts. This makes students have a false fee balance leading them to be sent home.
When a lunch program is in place, the Director of Secondary Education Paul Kibet said that it should be made optional and be reasonable.
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) Macharia also directed school heads to stick to the stipulated school fees and avoid burdening parents with unnecessary levies.
CEO Nancy Macharia warned that it will punish school heads flouting fees guidelines as the commission carries out an investigation.
“The TSC is investigating a few allegations that some teachers are not complying with Government directives on fees. Action will be taken on those found culpable,” CEO Nancy Macharia said.
“I want to direct that all heads of schools take to STP rated school fees. Some teachers are not complying with government directives directive on fees. action will be taken on those fields if they are found culpable.” Said Macharia.
Due to the reduced time or academic year, the ministry announced a reduction in secondary school fees. National schools will pay 8500 less while extra county and county schools, will pay 5,500 less.
The shortness of the calendar is an adjustment of the traditional January to December school cycle that was altered by the closure of learning institutions in march last year.
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic term-one began on July 26 until October 2nd with time 2 starting on October 11th which will run until December 23rd.
