Education CS Warns School Principals Charging Extra Monies

In a determined speech given at Kakamega High School on September 1, 2023, Ezekiel Machogu, the Cabinet Secretary for Education, left no room for ambiguity as he cautioned secondary school principals against unjustifiably raising tuition fees at the start of the third term.

Machogu strongly stated that any school principal caught seeking additional tuition fees from parents would face strict disciplinary actions.

He reassured parents that the government would not tolerate any attempts by school administrations to increase tuition fees. He emphasized that fees would strictly adhere to government-set rates, with national schools requiring an annual payment of Ksh 53,000.

The CS’s message was crystal clear: “No principal or school administration board has the authority to increase the allocated amount. We understand that parents face financial challenges, and any deviation from the prescribed fees is unacceptable.”

He also stressed that severe penalties awaited any principal caught soliciting extra funds from parents. This declaration served as a stark reminder of the consequences for those attempting to exploit the situation.

Initially, secondary school tuition fees were set at Ksh 53,554 for National Schools and Ksh 40,535 for other categories, as announced by the Ministry of Education in February.

Furthermore, the Ministry directed education officers to diligently identify schools engaged in the illegal collection of fees and promptly report such cases to CS Machogu.

The government’s unwavering commitment to maintaining agreed-upon tuition rates ensures that parents can plan for their children’s education without unexpected surprises.
