Cabinet Secretary Education Prof George Magoha has asked journalists to report on all aspects regarding the full resumption of learning in Educational institutions in ways that will help learners to settle down with hope.
Further, the CS has barred journalists from visiting schools. Magoha announced the order alongside ICT Cabinet Secretaries Joe Mucheru, Heath CS Mutahi Kagwe, the Council of Governors in a panel on Sunday, January 3, barely a day before learning formally resumed.
Local and County Directors were instructed to bar journalists from entering schools, the state accusing the media of spoiling their image.
“Watching the news and seeing that the media have unfettered access to schools is worrying. Regional and County Directors warn school heads that the media should not access schools unless given permission,” read the directive.
Reporters will therefore be required to seek authorization from the Ministry of Education to enter the schools, as compared to before when they only sought permission from school heads.
The directive was announced after Education CS Magoha was ripped apart by Kenyans for his order to have learners study under trees.
Following schools’ resumption, the media has exhibited the predicament of learners spotted sitting outside classrooms, others congested in rooms, and others underneath trees.
Images of a boy from Ogenya Primary School in Nyando County reading from outside and putting on torn shoes sparked a mass uproar on social media, Kenyans blasting the area MP for subjecting the students in such a learning environment.
